Hurrah for “Leap Seconds”!

Posted by Jonathan at 19:00:08 UTC on the 31st of December, 2005

The little round piece of rock in space we call Earth trundles full-circle around the Sun once again with those from UTC+14 (Republic of Kiribati & the Line Islands) to UTC+5 (Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, and so on) having already welcomed in the year 2006! Don’t forget that a Leap Second is to be inserted at the end of 2005, so the countdown for tonight will actually go like this:

  • 23:59:57, 31st December 2005
  • 23:59:58, 31st December 2005
  • 23:59:59, 31st December 2005
  • 23:59:60, 31st December 2005
  • 00:00:00, 1st January 2006

Enjoy your leap second for an extra long snog with the nearest member of the opposite sex, pet animal, fluffy plush toy, the laptop or the back of your weaker hand and onwards to 2006! :D

PS: For those at home surfing the Internet and in dire need of gasms, the Photogasm™ in Reykjavík and Icelandic Photogasm™ from my World Domination 2005 gallery, should keep you occupied and give that warm, fuzzy feeling somewhere around your knickers. ;)

Icelandic Photogasm™

Posted by Jonathan at 13:32:22 UTC on the 30th of December, 2005

Hard to imagine that it is already over 6 months ago, give or take a few days, that I was last in Iceland so going through these photographs and publishing them online has certainly brought back some memories. :D Certainly wishing I was back there again though I know I don’t miss the extortionately high cost of everything! I have also noted that the previous Photogasm™ in Reykjavík may well have been causing gasms of other sorts as I checked the click-through counts of certain pictures! ;)

So with New Year’s Eve tomorrow and some of my dear readers wisely opting to stay at home, here are a snippet of the next few hundred photographs which should keep you occupied for quite some time:

  • Heilsulindin Bláa Lónið (Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa)
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 1 of 17
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 2 of 17
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 3 of 17
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 7 of 17
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 8 of 17
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 9 of 17
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 10 of 17
  • Jökulsárlón Fréttir (Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon) - Page 12 of 17
  • The Golden Circle tour - Page 1 of 12
  • The Golden Circle tour - Page 3 of 12
  • The Golden Circle tour - Page 5 of 12
  • The Golden Circle tour - Page 6 of 12
  • The Golden Circle tour - Page 8 of 12
  • The Golden Circle tour - Page 10 of 12
  • Reykjavík, Ísland (Reykjavik, Iceland) to Vancouver BC, Canada

The albums in their full glory are as follows:

  1. Heilsulindin Bláa Lónið - An evening of relaxation at this unique geothermal spa… most handy after an 8 hour night-clubbing session!
  2. Jökulsárlón Fréttir - A mammoth 14 hour long day-trip to Jökulsárlón Fréttir along the south coast of Ísland
  3. The Golden Circle tour - Excursion to some of the best-known natural phenomena of Ísland
  4. Reykjavík, Ísland to Vancouver BC, Canada - Onwards to Canada, with a quick stop back home as I needed to pick up my plane tickets for the world trip!

More Photogasms™ to come in 2006! :D

冬至節 (Winter Solstice Festival) 2005

冬至節 (Winter Solstice Festival) is the last festival the Chinese celebrate before the arrival of the (Chinese) New Year. The longest night which occurs on Winter Solstice marks the maximal point of (Yin, feminine nature) where cold and darkness give way to the lengthening, warmer days representing the increase of (Yang, masculine nature). As Chinese culture is highly food centric, this day is another excuse to visit family, exchange gifts and gorge on food, all nicely topped off with a nice heart warming serving of 湯圓 (glutinous rice balls) in hot ginger & rock suger broth for dessert! ;)

Metropolitan Police terrorism questionnaire

Bertie Bear wearing his flag pin badges from Iceland, British Columbia (Canada), Canada, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Aboriginal Australia, Northern Territory (Australia), Singapore, Hong Hong, People's Republic of China, Macau, Germany & Austria

Feels odd to be back home and if superstitions mean anything, I’ve got both itchy hands and itchy feet since coming back! Now the left hand is because money is involved, giving in some cultures and receiving in others. The right hand is either receiving money or meeting someone new. The feet? Well, means I should be on my way to somewhere once again!

The Amazing Plush Fortune Cow being either wise as ever or perhaps another victim of BSE?

Definately would love to be able to keep hoping from place to place (currently feels the most natural and normal thing for me to do) and be a digital nomad or some such. Problem is… how could I finance such a dream? :)

Anyhow, after the last 5 months of being on the road with me, Bertie is proud of his little collection of pin badges which I diligently collected on his behalf. Alas Dubai was the only place where I couldn’t find a suitable pin. Ho-hum.

Bertie’s been joined with a new friend, the “Amazing Plush Fortune Cow” whom I picked up on impluse whilst walking through one of the many glossy shopping malls of Hong Kong! Can’t quite figure out if it (not named the cow yet incidently… any suggestions?) is even wiser than the ASCII Fortune Cow, or perhaps there is a case of BSE already after just a short 48 hours in the UK?

Yoshitomo Nara - 'Oh! My God! I Miss You' postcard book

Susanne has made me chuckle (handy, as I think I have post travelling blues) with her love for all things Asian, pink and kitschy by the way of pointing me to some postcards by Yoshitomo Nara. I agree these “Oh! My God! I Miss You” postcards look pretty nifty and they would make a worthy addition to Susi’s shrine! ;)

As for the photos which I’ve been saying they’ll go online once I’m back… Fear not! I am working on them (slowly) as I type this and I’ll be drip feeding them to you all over the next few days/weeks/months (have no idea how long it’ll really take!). I suggest you all get some clean knickers on and grab on to something firm in preparation, as this will be a once in a lifetime multiple-Photogasm™ which one is unlikely ever to experience again! ;)

[Auto Post] Blighty boogie!

Posted by Jonathan at 15:15:28 UTC on the 1st of December, 2005

Ta-ta for now Continential Europe with your many types of sausages, cheeses, oddly shaped & coloured bread, schnitzel, sauerkraut and driving on the wrong side of the road just like the Americans! Hello again Britannia with your fish & chips, mushy peas, fried Mars Bars, grey weather and Chicken Tikka Masala… Hmmm, have I mentioned mushy peas? :P

I do hope the railway isn’t on strike or interruptions by the perpetual engineering works (you’ve been at them for the last decade or something?) and that there is a seat for weary old me for the one and a bit hour journey from London to Northampton. Still, Blighty should feel positively warm after Continential Europe, so there will be no case of “un-seasonably heavy clothing” for me! :D
