I’m still alive…

Posted by Jonathan at 13:54:00 UTC on the 29th of November, 2003

Yipes… Haven’t really noticed that it’s nearly been 3 months since I last posted… But no worries! I’m alive and well. :D

The year 2003 has proven to be a bit of an “annus horribilus” having gone into that New Year with the knowledge that my position at Texas Instruments as an engineer had become redundant and that my mother had been diagnosed as terminally ill with cancer and unlikely to live much more than another year. Infact, her time was a mere 7 months till she peacefully passed away in her sleep in the early hours of June 18th, 2003.

Also, at last count I’ve sent over 200 letters of application to various companies for various jobs so that I would be back in gainful employment. Alas that has so far resulted in just 3 interviews with one, rather ironically at Job Centre Plus in a customer support role on LearnDirect’s telephone helpdesk.

With 2003 now coming to a close with 2004 looming, all things so far in the last few weeks point to an “annus mirabilis”. Firstly I’ve had the opportunity to work with the wonderful people at the West-Midlands Marie Curie Cancer Care Regional Offices based in Northampton working on a voluntary basis helping out with various administrative tasks. Secondly, I should be back in employment RSN™ after having a positive 1st and 2nd interview at RS Components based up in Corby, Northamptonshire; where if successful, I’ll be working as a Media Content Editor.

Whilst it is only a 6 month contract, the job is interesting and challenging and experience would be gained. Also, speaking from other people who have looked for jobs when in and out of work, it’s always much easier when you are employed.

However I do have a slight problem as it would be a 20-ish mile commute, which is rather difficult without a car and having to rely on the public transportation system, namely buses takes some 1.5 hours each way. Though hopefully that’ll be remedied quickly as I’ll have the capital to fund driving lessions and the purchasing of a car, most likely second-hand. In turn, it should help in any subsequent job search as I can look futher afield.

Even if the position at RS Components proves fruitless I can continue with what I’m already doing at Marie Curie Cancer Care, as part of vocational training I requested whilst I was on New Deal in association with Careers Development Group… So it’s not an excercise of futility since it too has potential avenues. :D

Also, incase you haven’t noticed the Eclipse Internet banner at the top of the front page, it’s there to pimp their exception ADSL Internet services… referral from that adds credits to my account which build up and redeemed as free service for me. Alternatively, you can register with Eclipse Internet and just use my referrer code LAMBCUTLET when signing up. :D
